The Garden Route has offers a large variety of wildlife. A growing number of private reserves along the Garden Route have stocked up with game such as elephants, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, crocodiles - all of which were indigenous to the area once upon a time.
There are elephant sanctuaries in Knysna and the Crags in Plettenberg Bay, where elephants may be fed, ridden or walked with. Wild elephants in the Knysna Forest, once regarded as extinct, have been recently spotted.
